Dotted all around town in Beppu are community bathhouses where locals drop in every day. These aren't hidden inside ryokan inns—they are part of everyday neighborhood life. I've put together a list of spots within easy walking distance of the station that welcome visitors, leaving out the many local baths strictly reserved for neighborhood association members. The architecture spans different eras, from a Western-style Taisho building and Showa-era gables to a bathhouse dating back to the Edo period. The water in Beppu tends to run hot, so it's best to start with the lukewarm bath (nuru-yu).

Ekimae Koto Onsen
Right outside Beppu Station, this charming Western-style building features white walls and a green roof. Built in 1924 through local donations, it’s a community bath still lovingly maintained by the neighborhood association.
