Cradled by the outer rim of Mount Aso at the bottom of the caldera, Uchinomaki Onsen is the largest hot spring town in the area. Alongside the baths at local inns, there are several traditional neighborhood bathhouses (machiyu) where locals drop in just like a public sento, and visitors are warmly welcomed. Each bathhouse boasts its own unique spring qualities, making it a treat to stroll between them and compare. Renowned literary figures like Soseki Natsume, Tekkan Yosano, and Akiko Yosano also visited this town. Tourist facilities and accommodations across Aso City are operating as usual without major damage following the July 2026 Kumamoto earthquake (as of September 2026). The area is also eligible for the Kyushu Recovery Discount.
