The "36 Mitsuke" (guard gates) of Edo Castle were a network of gates and guardhouses built to protect the Shogunate. While they're famously called the "36 Gates of Edo Castle," some say there were actually a few more! Today, their names live on as major train stations, intersections, and bridges right in the heart of Tokyo.
